BlueWave presents:
Gun Safety in America
An Education Forum & Panel Discussion
Thursday March 21 - 6:30pm in Montclair

A Public Education Forum and Panel Discussion on understanding the issues surrounding our epidemic of gun violence in America - how we got here, what we can do now to shape and pass legislation, and how we can become effective advocates in the fight to eliminate more tragic and unnecessary deaths from gun violence.

We are honored to be joined by Michael and Teresa Pohle of Flemington to speak about their personal experience. The Pohles lost their son Michael Jr. to gun violence during the Virginia Tech tragedy in 2007. They have since become vocal advocates for efforts to reduce gun violence and access to dangerous weapons, including work with the Mayors Against Illegal Guns (M.A.I.G) and in New Jersey Coalition to Reduce Gun Violence.  Joining them on the panel will be:

Jim Johnson is a former Clinton Administration official and Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. During his tenure at the Treasury Department from 1996-2000, Mr. Johnson served as Under Secretary for Enforcement, and oversaw the operations of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms (ATF), Secret Service, the US Customs Service, and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.  During his time in the U.S. Attorney's office in New York, he assisted in the management of the Criminal Division while prosecuting a wide variety of criminal cases, and  served on the White House Security Review.   He is former Chair of the Board of the Brennan Center for Justice and is also a trustee of the Montclair Art Museum.

Rob V. Tessara  is the founder of Safe School Technologies, and a recognized expert on youth violence prevention. Robert was the National Law Enforcement Director of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, where he worked with leading law enforcement executives and members of Congress to support common-sense legislation to prevent gun violence. He has served as National Membership Director of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids and Executive Director of the New Jersey Association of School Resource Officers.  He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police where he serves as a member of their firearms and juvenile justice committees. He recently participated in a private meeting with Pres. Obama to discuss gun violence among our nation's youth.

Topics covered during the panel discussion will include
  • an update on current proposed legislation at the federal and state level
  • what constructive actions you can take to move the debate forward
  • how to get citizen-driven momentum started in your community
Forum is free & open to the public.
