Announcing BlueWaveNJ Cares:
Jersey Shore Day Trips to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy
with clean up & recovery - next trip is Saturday 11/24.
 
This past weekend almost 100 of your friends and neighbors joined BluewaveNJ Cares to assist in cleaning up the damage left behind by Hurricane Sandy in the town of Highland. We were part of a group of 300 volunteers that assisted residents to recover belongings and clean debris out of over 65 damaged homes.
 
Our Next Day Trip is this Saturday, 11/24 at 8 AM
 
  
  
 
Highlands is a hardworking middle-class town near Sandy Hook that was completely devastated by the storm - 1500 homes suffered severe flooding damage and a massive cleanup effort is now needed.

Travel Information:
  • Highlands, NJ is approximately 1 hour from Montclair, plan to depart at 8AM
  • Carpools available: Meet 8AM at Montclair High School, in the parking lot behind the George Innes Annex, corner of N. Fullerton & Chestnut Streets
  • To drive direct to Highland Staging Area: Staging Area #22 Snug Harbor Ave, Highlands, NJ 07732 (across from Huddy Park). Meet there by 9:30AM

Volunteer Information: 
  • We plan to assemble self sufficient teams of 4 to 6 to clean each house.
  • Please wear old clothes and boots, you will get dirty.  
  • Please note that some of the tasks may be in unsafe conditions with hazards related to the hurricane damage and property remediation. 
  • For these reasons, please consider your own safety before you volunteer and we do not advise bringing young children.
  • If possible, bring your own tools (see list below), anything that may be useful in removing carpets, sheet rock and installation.  
  • There will be opportunities for less physical work, including salvaging personal belongings and preparing meals for the local residents.
 
Suggested Supplies to bring:
  • Wear old clothes and boots if you have them 
  • Gloves/protective eyewear/mask or respirator
  • Hammer, with a claw side
  • Sledge Hammer or pick axe
  • Flat pry bar and/or crow bar
  • Heavy-duty waste containers (20 Gallon)
  • Large and/or contractors garbage bags
  • Flat end shovels, large scoop shovels and large brooms
  • Heavy metal box cutters or retractable knives
  • Paint or any type of heavy scraper
  • Bring your own lunch, water and snacks
  • DONATIONS OF COATS or CLOTHING IS NOT NEEDED at this time!
